HANOI, Vietnam — A recent report highlights a troubling trend: millions of tons of electronic waste (e-waste) from the United States are being exported to developing nations in Southeast Asia. These countries, often ill-equipped to manage hazardous waste, are facing what experts call a 'hidden tsunami' of discarded electronics.

In 2022 alone, Americans discarded approximately 6.9 million tons of electronics, contributing significantly to the global e-waste crisis. Alarmingly, around 70% of this waste is shipped overseas, with Southeast Asian nations becoming major destinations. Countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines are among those receiving these shipments, where the infrastructure to process such materials safely is limited.

Health and Environmental Risks

The e-waste crisis poses severe health risks. Many components of electronic devices contain toxic substances, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leach into the environment if not processed correctly. According to the United Nations, only about 17% of global e-waste is recycled in an environmentally safe manner. This statistic underscores the urgency for better solutions and regulations.

Despite international agreements aimed at controlling the movement of hazardous waste, enforcement remains weak. Countries in Southeast Asia often lack the necessary regulations and resources to deal with the influx of e-waste.
