MACC Investigates Malaysian Military Officers in Southern Smuggling Case
MACC Intensifies Probe into Military-Linked Smuggling
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has intensified its investigation into a smuggling syndicate allegedly involving military personnel in southern Malaysia. The probe focuses on activities near the Straits of Melaka, particularly around Melaka and Johor, and seeks classified documents from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to strengthen the case.
High-Ranking Officers Detained
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that three active and two former senior officers from the army and navy were detained under Op Sohor for allegedly aiding smuggling operations. The operation, targeting both domestic and cross-border smuggling, underscores concerns about corruption and collusion within defense ranks.
Joint Operations and Arrests
In addition to the military officers, ten other individuals, including an Indonesian national, were arrested in the Klang Valley. The coordinated effort involved MACC’s Intelligence Division and the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS). All suspects were presented at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court for remand under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
Collaboration with Ministry of Defence
Tan Sri Azam Baki expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Force for supporting the MACC investigation. By obtaining confidential reports from MINDEF, the commission aims to build a stronger case against those allegedly facilitating smuggling through military channels.
