India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ & Akash Prime: Boosting High‑Altitude Air Defence

What Was Operation Sindoor?

In response to the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. Over 23 minutes, coordinated strikes—by Rafale jets, BrahMos cruise missiles, SkyStriker loitering munitions and indigenous defense systems—targeted nine terrorist camps deep inside Pakistan and PoK, eliminating over 100 militants with zero collateral damage, according to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval 1.

Role of Akash‑Series Missile Systems

A cornerstone of India’s multi‑layered air defence during the operation was the indigenous Akash (also called Akashteer) system. Operative from May 7‑10, it reportedly intercepted over 600 Pakistani drones and missiles with a 100% success rate 2.

Enter Akash Prime: High‑Altitude Defender

Following Operation Sindoor, DRDO and Army Air Defence have field‑tested the upgraded Akash Prime at 15,000 ft in Ladakh. Trials on July 16‑17 saw it score two direct hits on fast‑moving aerial targets in rarefied air—testing navigation, trajectory, and an indigenous RF seeker 3.

Technical Upgrades of Akash Prime

  • Enhanced RF seeker for terminal-phase accuracy;
  • Optimized cold‑weather propulsion and ground radar interfaces;
  • Effective range of ~30‑35 km, suitable for mountainous terrain;
  • Deployment to form the 3rd and 4th Akash regiments 4.

Strategic Impact on Borders with China and Pakistan

Akash Prime is part of India’s fortified air defence network along the sensitive China and Pakistan borders. High-altitude capability enables precise interception of drones, cruise missiles, and aircraft at elevations above 4,500 m 5.

Defence Strategy and Future Direction

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan emphasized that “yesterday’s weapons can’t win today’s wars,” advocating for rapid indigenization and modernization—Akash Prime being a prime example 6. U.S. expert John Spencer also highlighted Operation Sindoor as proof of India’s defence readiness and the shortcomings of Chinese-origin gear with Pakistan 7.

Trivia Corner

  • Akash missile (DRDO‑developed since 2009) uses command guidance mid‑course and active radar homing, with range up to ~30 km, max altitude ~18 km, Mach 2.5 speed 8.
  • Akashteer integrated AI-controlled command networks, achieving 100% drone-kill rate during Operation Sindoor 9.
  • Akash-NG, the next-gen variant, will soon extend range to 70–80 km for IAF 10.
  • Akash Prime’s 15,000 ft test in Ladakh confirms feasibility of high-altitude deployment, vital for Himalayan defense.

Conclusion

Operation Sindoor underscored India’s capability to deliver precision strikes using a blend of air, missile, and indigenous defense systems. Akash Prime’s successful high-altitude trials further reinforce India’s evolving posture—defense technology optimized for challenging terrain and emerging aerial threats from China and Pakistan.
