Government Pushes for Saturation in Rural Housing Under PMAY-G

India’s Rural Housing Mission Reaches New Heights

The Government of India is accelerating its efforts to achieve complete housing coverage for eligible rural households under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Grameen (PMAY-G). Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, informed the Lok Sabha that 4.12 crore houses have been sanctioned to states, with 2.9 crore already completed.

Financial Milestones Achieved

Since 2014, the Centre has released over ₹2.71 lakh crore for rural housing, a remarkable increase from just ₹66 crore allocated in 2013–14. This funding surge has enabled large-scale construction, ensuring essential amenities reach rural families efficiently.

Innovative Technology in Housing

The 2024 Awas Survey introduces two innovative features: e-KYC verification for smooth beneficiary authentication and Aadhaar-based geo-tagged self-registration, allowing individuals to register directly by standing on their land and submitting a geo-tagged photograph. These technological enhancements aim to guarantee transparency, citizen empowerment, and accurate targeting.

Importance of State & Public Participation

Dr. Sekhar emphasized that achieving full saturation requires active collaboration between states, Union Territories, and citizens. Grassroots-level coordination and public involvement remain key to ensuring every eligible household benefits.

Socio-Economic Impact of PMAY-G

Over the past decade, PMAY-G has evolved from a basic housing initiative into a tech-driven, citizen-centric program. Beyond providing shelter, it has stimulated local employment, boosted the construction industry, and improved health, education, and social stability in rural areas.
