Bihar Assembly Elections: Final Voter List Released, Poll Schedule Anticipated Soon
Bihar's Assembly Elections: Key Dates and Details
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to release the final voter list for the Bihar Assembly Elections today at 3 PM. This marks the end of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which aimed to ensure an accurate and updated electoral roll.
Upcoming Poll Schedule
In the wake of the voter list announcement, the ECI plans to meet with poll observers on October 3, followed by an on-the-ground visit to Bihar on October 4. The official election schedule is expected to be unveiled between October 6 and 7, providing crucial details for voters and political parties alike.
Changes from Previous Elections
Unlike the 2020 Bihar Assembly Elections, which were conducted in three phases due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the upcoming elections are likely to be held in fewer rounds. This change aims to simplify the electoral process and enhance voter participation.
Current Assembly Term and Legal Proceedings
The current assembly term is set to conclude on November 22, 2025, and the elections are anticipated to be announced by early November. Notably, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a final hearing on October 7 regarding petitions that challenge the SIR process in the state. A senior ECI official emphasized the importance of conducting elections in a timely manner, asserting that there is no court-imposed stay on the SIR or related processes.
Voter Statistics and Revision Insights
The draft electoral rolls published on August 1 listed approximately 7.24 crore voters from a total of 7.89 crore registered voters. During the revision period, a total of 65.63 lakh names were removed, with 2.17 lakh requests for deletion and 16.93 lakh applications for inclusion. Additionally, over 16.56 lakh voters submitted Form-6 for new registrations between August 1 and September 1.
Concerns Raised by Opposition
Opposition parties have expressed concerns about the revision process, claiming it might lead to mass disenfranchisement, particularly affecting economically disadvantaged and minority communities. The release of the final voter list is therefore anticipated to clarify the eligible electorate ahead of these significant assembly polls.
