Amazon’s Android Appstore to Shut Down After 14 Years — Don’t Miss Your Refund Deadline!
Amazon Appstore: End of an Era
After a 14-year run, Amazon is officially discontinuing its Amazon Appstore on Android devices, effective August 20, 2025. While the Appstore will remain active on Amazon Fire TVs and Fire Tablets—its core ecosystem—it will no longer support Android phones or tablets. This marks the end of Amazon’s bid to rival Google Play on open Android platforms.
Trivia cue: Did you know Amazon Appstore once featured a “Free App of the Day” in its early years?
Amazon Coins: Spend or Lose Them!
The shutdown also means the end of Amazon Coins, the platform’s virtual currency. New purchases were halted months ago (February 2025), and users have until August 20, 2025, to use any remaining balance. Any unspent coins after that date will be automatically refunded—but refunds only succeed if your payment info is current.
Trivia cue: Amazon held “tens of millions of dollars” in outstanding virtual-currency liability as of 2024!
Timeline at a Glance
- March 22, 2011: Amazon Appstore launches on Android platforms.
- Feb 20, 2025: Amazon stops accepting new app submissions and Coin purchases.
- August 20, 2025: Appstore and Amazon Coins discontinued on Android.
Why the Shutdown?
Amazon never gained significant market share against Google Play—by 2022, Appfigures data showed Amazon Appstore’s global downloads were under 1%. Meanwhile, Amazon’s own Fire ecosystem (Fire TVs, Fire Tablets) continues to prosper. Shutting down the Android Appstore helps the company streamline operations and sharpen focus where user engagement is strongest.
Trivia cue: At its peak, the Appstore sported nearly half a million apps—that’s around 487,000 apps by 2019!
What Users Should Do Now
- Check your Amazon Coins balance via your Amazon Appstore account or Amazon online.
- Update your payment method to ensure refunds don’t bounce.
- Backup or transfer apps you've installed via the Appstore—post-shutdown, many may stop functioning or not get updates.
Fun Fact
Fun Fact: When the Amazon Appstore began in 2011, it offered a unique “Test Drive” browser feature that let you preview apps virtually—long before in-browser demos became common!
