This threshold is named after Hungarian-American engineer Theodore von Kármán, who established that this altitude is where conventional aircraft cannot maintain flight without reaching orbital velocity.

Because of the Earth’s equatorial bulge, which makes points near the equator, like Ecuador, further from the Earth’s center than points at higher latitudes. Ecuador’s elevation, combined with this bulge, means that the peak of Mount Chimborazo, which stands at about 6,263 meters (20,548 feet), is actually the farthest point from the Earth's center, even though it is lower in altitude than Everest.
