Starting July 28, 2025, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has initiated major excavation near the colonial‑era Gole Market to construct a pedestrian subway as part of a heritage restoration and redevelopment project. Bhai Veer Singh Marg—key artery adjacent to Gole Market—is now restricted in both directions. Motorists can still access segments via Kali Bari Marg, GPO roundabout, and designated service lanes. Additional diversions may be implemented depending on construction progress.
Heritage Restoration Details
The ₹21.6 crore initiative includes retrofitting the 1,407 sqm structure with a glass dome, insulated roofing, central air‑conditioning, lifts and ornamental features, while preserving its colonial façades and entrances. A service block and underground parking (200–250 cars) within 100 m are also part of the project.

Despite barricades placed in mid‑July, actual excavation was delayed, affecting foot traffic and visibility for nearby shopkeepers. NDMC officials now confirm work will commence between July 22–25, and aim to complete within five months.
